In 1924: The Royal Greenwich Observatory begins broadcasting the hourly time signals known as the Greenwich Time Signal or "BBC pips".
In 1971: Astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell land at the Fra Mauro formation on the Moon as part of the Apollo 14 mission.
In 1974: Space probe Mariner 10 returns the first close-up photos of the cloud structure of Venus. It is also the first time a spacecraft uses a gravity assist from one planet to help it reach another planet, as Mariner 10 goes on to visit Mercury in March.
